One alarming discovery I’ve had after doing a series of decluttering is this: I contribute a lot of harm to our environment in the form of waste—plastic waste, in particular. My desire to remedy this frustration led me to learn more about the zero waste movement, and I have since challenged myself to exert conscious effort in lowering my environmental impact, starting with my lunch kit.

It has been a little over a month since I launched Minimalism Journal—time does fly by very fast! As I celebrate my little one-month milestone, I thought I’d write about something different. In my previous posts, I’ve mostly focused on physical and digital decluttering—but minimalism is so much more than that. Sure, my journey began with the physical. It’s about time I extend my minimalist practices to the workplace as well, starting with my very own desk. After many years of working the same job in the same company, I’ve come to realize that I don’t even use (or remember owning!) half of the things I own and helplessly store in my small drawers. At the same time, minimalism and productivity are said to go well together, and this is another benefit of minimalism that I would want to enjoy. So when it was time for me to set up my workspace, I had a very strategic approach.

When decluttering, the question I ask myself is: “What do I need to keep?” rather than, “What do I need to get rid of?” This helps me in maintaining my focus on the items I consider to be necessary. If a certain item doesn’t make it on my to-keep list, it’s considered “excess stuff.” But what do I do with these excess stuff?
In this series, I will share my experiences on the different options I had when parting ways with excess stuff. For Part 1 of this series, I will focus on one of the first options we tend to consider when an item no longer fulfills the purpose it once had: selling it.
I signed up for a Netflix account because the idea of having access to so many movies and TV shows anytime, anywhere was too difficult to resist. But Netflix culture really wasn’t for me—I’m not a binge-watcher and am very picky about what I watch. Still, I kept my Netflix account in case I feel any desire to watch something.
